MEC TO OPEN BENGU CLINIC

In line with his commitment to promote Primary Health Care, the MEC for Health Dr. BM Goqwana will be opening another clinic in Lady Frere
at Qutubeni Location. The Bengu Clinic as it is called was built from the Reconstruction and Development Project Fund at a cost of R1,5
million.

Bengu clinic is situated in the deep rural areas of Glen Grey. For many years the people in that area have been deprived of access to
health services, as they were not considered a priority by the then Transkei government. With the birth of a democratic government whose
priorities are to bring health services to areas that have been marginalized especially those in deep rural areas, the community of that
area approached the Eastern Cape Department of Health and their voice was heard.

In September 1998, the dream came true as the construction started. It was completed in February 2001 and started to serve the community on
17th April 2001. The clinic will serve a population of about 10,000 people.

The media is being invited to witness once again another achievement of the Eastern Cape Department of Health in 2001. The programme will
start at 10H00.
